Where are Cariboo products manufactured?

All products are designed here in New Zealand and manufactured to a very high standard (our manufacturing occurs both in Canterbury, NZ, and offshore). We take great care in building relationships with our manufacturers to ensure each and every product is made with pride with very high quality and safety standards.

The majority of Cariboo soft goods are made in New Zealand, by our skilled Cariboo machinists - Look for the NZ MADE Stamp on our New Zealand made products.

What kind of wood does Cariboo use?

We use the radiata pine grown in New Zealand. Radiata Pine is an adaptive, quickly-maturing pine tree. It is grown in a climate that produces high grade premium wood, and harvested from plantations that meet the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) stringent environmental, social and economic standards. Because it grows quickly, Radiata Pine forests are easy to manage sustainably. This type of wood is dense and strong, with a naturally even finish when cut and sanded.

It is important to note that at times there can be natural imperfections beyond our control in the grain of the timber.

We also use low emissions MDF in some of our designs. The low emissions Medium Density Fibreboard timber used is of CARB P2 standard and meets the requirements set by the California Air Resource Board (CARB - phase 2). According to ASTM E 1333-96, formaldehyde emission is less than 0,11 ppm, which corresponds to CARB, phase 2 as set by the ACTM

The MDF used is also sealed with a non-toxic baby safe coating.

Is the coating on Cariboo’s furniture safe?

All Cariboo products are finished with coatings and stains that comply to AS/NZS 2172:2013 (cots for household use) and AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2012+A1:2016 (Children’s toy safety requirements) The products used are Nitrocellulose lacquers or water based coatings. These coating systems comply with New Zealand, Australian and European standards. They are Formaldehyde-free and Phthalate-free. They are specifically designed for nursery furniture and children’s toys.

Is Cariboo furniture easy to assemble?

Yes! We know life is busy and time is precious when you have wee ones (or expecting your first precious bundle) which is why our products are designed and manufactured to ensure that you have to spend as little time possible assembling your new purchase! We know that you’ll have your nursery looking fabulous in no time.

How can I dispose of the packaging from my Cariboo product?

We aim to use recyclable packaging wherever possible, some do contain polystyrene for added protection whilst in transit - we encourage recycling your polystyrene packaging via the Expol Earth initiative (Polystyrene can not be placed in your kerbside recycling bin) where it will be repurposed over and over again.

Expol Earth free recycling initiative was developed with the specific intention to give consumers a place where they could deposit their polystyrene waste. The waste must be clean, have no food residue, dirt, stickers or glue. Up to two rubbish bags full are accepted at one time.

Expol have made a commitment to the environment and take responsible manufacturing seriously. Hence the introduction of the EXPOL Earth brand, designed to incorporate all environmental, recycling and sustainability initiatives.

Currently Expol have cubes in 25 outlets nationwide and collect over 300 cubic metre per month. EXPOL provide this service free to consumers and the stores and we see this as part of our environmental commitment to creating a sustainable planet.

When collected it is repurposed into a selection of products including StyroDrain, QuickDrain, UnderFloor, ThermaSlab. A true closed loop life manufacturing process.

Get behind this amazing initiative and recycle your packaging - find your nearest recycling cube here!

How should I care for my furniture?

A soft cloth and soapy warm water is all you should need to remove small surface marks. We do suggest doing this as soon as possible to prevent permanent marking/damage. Sunlight can sometimes affect the colour of your furniture over time causing fading or discoloration.

I need to replace a part for my Cariboo product - can I do this?

We stock a variety of parts and hardware on hand: If you can't find the part you are looking for in our parts category (found in the footer menu at the bottom of any page under Shop) all you need to do to replace the necessary part for your product is email us at: info@cariboo.co.nz (it’s very helpful if you can send us an image of your product at the same time). Do Cariboo bassinets include a mattress?

Yes, all Cariboo bassinets come complete with a foam mattress and baseboard. Our standard foam mattresses can be upgraded to our premium merino wool option if you choose to at the time of purchase.

How do I wash my Cariboo bassinet fabric?

The bassinet fabric is 100% cotton – which means that, as a natural fibre, it needs to be treated with care and washed delicately. We recommend washing your bassinet fabric by hand. When cotton is wet it contracts; to ensure it doesn’t shrink, reshape and iron while damp. We wouldn’t tumble dry this fabric!

How do I clean my Cariboo Wool Mattress Topper?

The Wool Toppers are made with 100% natural wool fibre. This means that a hand wash is preferred – otherwise the fibres will separate.

Once wet, lay it flat to dry – and remember that any moisture will expel naturally from the wool with airing. If there’s any staining, spot cleaning is best.

Why wool?

Wool is a super fibre! It’s naturally anti-bacterial and it doesn't harbour odour, so it does not need to be washed as often as other fabrics, which – we don’t need to tell you – is a relief!

It also has excellent moisture wicking properties; it pulls moisture into the core of the fibre so that it doesn't feel wet or soggy. (Did you know, it can absorb moisture up to one-third of its own weight?!). Wool is also highly naturally flame resistant, and frequently used for mattresses and rugs for that reason.

What is the foam bassinet mattress made of?

We offer many different bassinet mattress options.

Our foam bassinet mattresses come standardly with all Cariboo bassinets and are made especially for us. They are made from flexible Polyurethane Foam and we do not add any fire retardants or chemicals. This mattress has the "Healthguard" tick which only a few selected foams have and it also complies to the required New Zealand and Australian Safety Standards. This is the same grade foam used by Sealy Beds manufacturers.

We use foam as it provides a firm flat surface with is the recommended surface by health professionals worldwide to encourage baby to sleep on its back.
We then recommend the use of a Wool Topper, which is a natural wool layer. Covered with a 100% cotton cover, and placed on top of the foam, the Wool Topper forms a natural layer between the baby and the foam. You get the best of both worlds! This natural layer also helps to regulate baby’s temperature and can give a good indication if the baby is overheating as the outside cover will feel damp when you pick up the baby after a nap.

What fabric are the bassinet bags made from?

The bassinets are made from high quality, 100% Cotton Drill fabric, sourced for its strength and durability.

Can I use my Gentle Motions Bassinet on a Folding Bassinet frame?

Unfortunately, the Gentle Motions Bassinet is designed to fit inside a cot or on a Gentle Motions frame only. It will not fit the Folding Bassinet frame.

I have assembled my bassinet but the safety arrow on the metal bracket between the legs is pointing down instead of up. How do I fix this?

This is easy to fix. Simply unlatch the metal bracket, bring the legs both back to a vertical position and open them back out the opposite way. Lock the bracket into place. ensuring that the smooth head of the bolt that connects the legs together is facing the outside on both legs. Now that the arrow is pointing upwards your bassinet is safe for use.
